FDLR militias in DRC kill 3 Congolese nationals in criminal attack

By Moses Gisa

FDLR militias’ days in DRC are numbered.

The terror group FDLR has killed three Congolese nationals, according to news coming in from DRC. The brutal killings happened recently in a place called Kinyandonyi, near Kiwanja Town in the country’s Northern Kivu Province. This website is reliably informed that the Rwandan extremist militias targetted civilians during recent clashes with Mai Mai militias.

It is said that battle between the two groups erupted last week over control of a mineral rich territory in the province.

“FDLR has been locked in a fierce tussle with Mai-Mai militias and they have been firing at each other’s bases, people’s lives are threatened, and they can’t venture out to their farms or markets to get food stuffs and other essentials,” a highly reliable source informed this news site. FDLR, one of the main criminal groups that the Congolese army has declared to eradicate from within DRC borders killed the three civilians “in a criminal raid,” our sources said.

Many other people were injured as the illegal armed group fought with the aim to illegally control mineral-rich areas in a country where it is completely unwelcome – as various Congolese pronouncements have indicated. “Tens of others have been injured, and close to a thousand fled their homes!” our source in Kiwanja disclosed.

FDLR, an offshoot of the army of the former regime of Habyarimana (ex-FAR) as well as Interahamwe militias – both that were the main perpetrators of the 94 Genocide against the Tutsi – has been on the spot over massacres of innocent Congolese since it came into being two decades ago. The anti-Rwanda terror group’s extremist ideology is the same as that of its forebears.

FDLR has in the past attempted skirmishes into Rwanda with the aim to sow terror, but has on numerous occasions suffered a bloody nose in its attacks that have been completely repulsed.

For almost three decades now, the terror outfit has been killing innocent Congolese, looting their properties and stealing from the mineral rich country. It’s top leaders, such as its former head Ignace Murwanashyaka, now deceased, have been indicted for crimes against humanity and locked up. Many have over the years been killed on the battlefront, including its longtime commander Sylvestre Mudacumura who was killed in September last year.

The Congolese government has been fighting FDLR and other armed militia groups to root them out of the Congolese jungles where they have established bases. From these their presence is considered a destabilizing factor not only in DRC but throughout the region. They have plundered populations all over eastern DRC, set up parallel taxation structures, and are complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity such as rape, recruitment of child soldiers, and massacres of civilians.

Recently a report following an investigation by the DRC Army, FARDC, concluded that FDLR militias were behind a recent terrorist attack on the Virunga National Park on 25 April this year that killed 17 innocent people, including 12 park rangers.

“In my view, the regional governments cannot afford to leave this group marauding; forcefully disbanding them is the only remedy!” commented an observer.
